It's Trinity Sunday smack dab in the middle of our Memorial Day holiday weekend. I'm doing my best to kick up my feet. Last weekend was a bit busy; but this week's different. Nothing too pressing ready to pounce.
A respite from the daily grind isn't just rest. It's a break. The steady stream of tasks needing attention both at work and in our cozy little casa have stopped flowing. They're still there, awaiting attention. But not during this time-out.
Many of us consider this a sort of kick-off weekend for summer. Last year, of course, that kick-off didn't travel very far. For many of us it was something like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football that Lucy holds for him. (Check it out HERE.) We were still in the midst of the C-Virus Mess that had almost everything on hold. Summer came as usual. But much of our typical summer activity got sucked into a tight vortex of social distancing, masks, restricted movement - all part of "lock-down."
I heard that some summer spots managed to attract folks. But our usual week-long jaunt to a little resort town got sidetracked by all the hub-bub. The restrictions and requirements put us off. We missed the get-away but likely wouldn't have enjoyed ourselves anyway under the circumstance.
This year's different. We're planning our first get-away in almost two years. We might even see some family on the way to our destination. Haven't seen them in almost two years as well.
Not that everything's all squared away. We've still got a lot of folks suffering the effects of the fear and hysteria our secular and religious "leaders" managed to inject into so many of us. The fact that most of our family kept our respective heads screwed on was a plus. But because we all live in the midst of all the nonsense, you really couldn't escape it.
While the lock-downs have eased a bit, we still have the "vaccine thing." And that one's just getting its legs. In our neck of the woods, they've posted jabbers at public gathering places: museums, concert venues, the zoo. If you let them stick you, you get in for free. Or if you're not going out, you can find a locale that gives you lottery tickets if you roll up your sleeve.
It seems they're determined to get all of us stuck, one way or the other. If these ridiculous shenanigans are the one way, you have to wonder what the other might be. Then again, it's Trinity Sunday in the midst of the Memorial Day Weekend. Who wants to think about all that?
Instead, there's plenty of rich soil in which to plant our thoughts. Start with the Trinity. Okay, so we'll likely not "figure out" the Trinity. But just because it's the most awe-inspiring mystery in the Universe doesn't mean we can't spend some time being simply awe-inspired.
Then there's the remembering thing of Memorial Day. Barbecues are great, but let's not forget the reason we're all lounging around grilling. A lot of men and women gave up their lives for us since our great country was founded in 1776. No Sunday respites and holiday weekends for them this year.
Between God and gratitude for those who made the supreme sacrifice, there's enough to occupy our time and attention. Do take some time. Do give them some attention. You can still enjoy the barbecue and - if you're fortunate enough - the time with family and friends. (Yes, it seems more of us are actually getting together these days!)
As for the remaining residue of the C-Virus Mess and the latest stick-it-in-your-arm nonsense, I'll be setting all that aside for a day or two.
What's your plan?
Happy Trinity Sunday!
Happy Memorial Day!
