Back to Normal

We've had a few months of special seasons. First, 40 days of Lent - a time for penance. Next, 40 days of Easter Season - a time to celebrate. After that, special feasts: Ascension, Pentecost, Holy Trinity, Corpus Christi. We tried to align ourselves, especially our work, with the seasons and feasts.

Oh, and there was that recent week's vacation. This year it just happened to arrive as all the special stuff ended.

Now we're back to normal.

So today's just like most other days throughout the year - nothing all that unusual or special going on.

When you go from special to normal/everyday, there can be a letdown. If that's the case, start the day off right and things will almost certainly perk up. Start how? You remember the drill, right? Pray, read Scripture, some good spiritual works, a few minutes of studying the doctrines of your Catholic religion. You'll find some nuggets in there to ponder for a few minutes. It's a sure antidote to this "normal" thing.

Here's something of an antidote I found in my morning reading: Psalm 107. In Latin, it begins: "Paratum cor meum" - My heart is ready. What are we ready for? Let's see...

My heart is ready: I will sing, and will give praise, with my glory.
Arise my glory; arise psaltery and harp: I will arise in the morning early.
I will praise thee, O Lord, among the people: and I will sing unto thee among the populations.
For thy mercy is great above the heavens: and thy truth even unto the clouds...

Was David in the same situation of facing a "normal" day when he wrote this? Could be. But see how his heart leaps when he thinks of God. Ours can - or maybe it's better to say should - leap as well. Why? If you're not sure, try thinking about "For thy mercy is great above the heavens: and thy truth even unto the clouds."

For a guy as imperfect and flawed as I am, knowing God's "mercy is great above the heavens" certainly has tremendous appeal!

In the swing of it yet? I hope so. Let's keep going:

Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens,

David's in touch with the Lord. We can be too.

...and thy glory over all the earth:

He glorifies God. We should glorify God too.

That thy beloved may be delivered.
Save with thy right hand and hear me.

He puts his fate in God's hands.

God hath spoken in his holiness...

He listens to God's word.

If we settle into our "normal" day at work with God by our side, we turn "normal" into praise, thanksgiving.

As we go through the day, we might even want to petition Our Lord.

If it's a normal day, you know not everything you touch will go smoothly. Being in touch with God from the get-go, rather than rely on ourselves, we might join with David in praying:

O grant us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man.

With God's help, our day can turn from just one of those days into a day to remember.

Through God we shall do mightily...

Psalm 107 just helped us turn this normal day into something really special.

Have a great day at work!
