In Case You Weren't Sure of God's Presence as You Get to Work Today

Having finished our mini-series on fitting our plan into God's Plan, next week we begin a new series about the spiritual life in our work. It's a familiar theme in these posts, of course. But we'll be turning to an old friend for guidance: Stefan Cardinal Wyszynski. It's been almost a year since we left off our discussion of the meaning of work from a Catholic perspective based on his book Working Your Way Into Heaven. It's time we return to the wisdom he shares in that book.

Until then, here's a poem to help us to be mindful of the importance of what we just learned about fitting our plan into God's. The author paints a simple picture of God's presence in our daily work, indeed in every moment of our lives. It should help us approach our work today mindful of His Presence.

“A Very Present Help” (Ps. 46:1)

He’s helping me now this moment,
Though I may not see it or hear,
Perhaps by a friend far distant,
Perhaps by a stranger near,
Perhaps by the printed word;
In ways that I know and know not
I have the help of the Lord.
He’s keeping me now – this moment,
However I need it most
Perhaps by a single angel,
Perhaps by a mighty host,
Perhaps by the chain that frets me,
Or the walls that shut me in;
In ways that I know and know not,
He keeps me from harm and sin.

He’s guiding me now – this moment,
In pathways easy or hard,
Perhaps by a door wide open,
Perhaps by a door fast barred,
Perhaps by a joy withholden,
Perhaps by a gladness given;
In ways that I know and know not
He’s leading me up to Heaven.

He’s using me now – this moment,
And whether I go or stand perhaps by a plan accomplished
Perhaps when He stays my hand
Perhaps by a word in season,
Perhaps by a silent prayer;
In ways that I know and know not,
His labor of love I share.

(Annie Johnson Flint)

He's here and He's not going anywhere. Let's see if we can remember that today as we all get busy with our work. Not matter the task, the deadline, He's watching and waiting. We only have to glance at Him throughout our day to receive His help in all we do.

Have a productive and holy day!
