A Sunday Thought to Start the Week Off Right

If you missed the video about the election posted last Sunday, take a few minutes this Sunday to watch it. If you do watch it, watch it a second time. It's worth it. You'll learn how a Catholic ought to approach the upcoming election.

Speaking of the election, among certain types, holding one's nose has become the latest fashion. Noting the quality and character of both candidates, a whole class of voters bemoans this crew and bewails the state of a nation that has seemingly scraped the bottom of the political barrel to come up with today's choices. However, one might wonder: If the current crop are persona non grata, to which 21st century presidential paragons are they comparing them: Bush Jr, Gore, McCain, Obama? Really?

Well, if our current era can't provide that man or woman of our political dreams, maybe that's not such a bad thing. After all, if we're at a stage where we invest that much in a single person, we've strayed far from that constitutional republic that emerged from the bloody conflict with Great Britain that saw the original 13 States come together, in those first words of our tattered Constitution, "in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity."

Just as we hit the "refresh" button to remind ourselves of the basic purpose of our daily labors as Catholic men at work, (HERE and HERE) let's take a step back this Sunday to clear our beleaguered brains of all the campaign rhetoric. Psalm 32 will remind us that no person born of woman holds the answer to turning our country around, to slow and reverse those trends away from the True, the Good, and the Beautiful that have picked up steam from the 1960s right through our own time.

By the word of the Lord the heavens were established;
and all the power of them by the spirit of his mouth:
Gathering together the waters of the sea, as in a vessel;
laying up the depths in storehouses.
Let all the earth fear the Lord,
and let all the inhabitants of the world be in awe of him.
For he spoke and they were made; he commanded and they were created.
The Lord bringeth to naught the counsel of nations;
and he rejecteth the devices of people,
and casteth away the counsels of princes.

No person or persons can replace or even approach the wisdom and power of God. Our hope remains solely in Him, not any political candidate.

But the counsel of the Lord standeth for ever:
the thoughts of his heart to all generations.
Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord:
the people whom he hath chosen for his inheritance.

Forget Clinton and Trump. With our American forbears, we can and should proudly proclaim: "In God We Trust."

The Lord hath looked from heaven: he hath beheld all the sons of men
From his habitation which he hath prepared,
he hath looked upon all that dwell on the earth,
He who hath made the hearts of every one of them:
who understandeth all their works.

Despite His power, He understands each and every one of us, all our hopes, our desires, our sorrows and suffering. The most "compassionate" political platform cannot touch even a stray thread of the hem of the mercy of God.

The king is not saved by a great army:
nor shall the giant be saved by his own strength.
Vain is the horse for safety: neither shall he be saved by the abundance of his strength.

Yes, we need a strong strong military and an effective defense policy to preserve our freedoms. But remember nothing can save us if we turn away from God.

Behold the eyes of the Lord are on them that fear him: and them that hope in his mercy.
To deliver their souls from death; and feed them in famine.
Our soul waiteth for the Lord: for he is our helper and protector.

Pray for that strong faith of our fathers who could turn to Him in the midst of any adversity, confident in His help, but most of all, in His love and mercy.

For in him our heart shall rejoice:
 and in his holy name we have trusted.
Let thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us,
as we have hoped in thee. 
 
So vote your conscience. But do so prayerfully. And recognize He Whom we really need to lead our country back to the righteous path.
