A Sunday Thought About the Sacred Heart to Start the Week Off Right

June arrived this past week, the month devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Heart of Our Lord, that same Heart pierced by the soldier's lance as He hung lifeless on the Cross, continues to pour out His Love and Mercy. Just as that broken Heart showered blood and water upon the faithful who remained at the foot of His Cross, so it continues to shower Love and Mercy upon all who remain faithful to Him today.

Thinking about such Infinite Love challenges our minds. Who can really comprehend this tremendous love? The words of theologians and spiritual writers try. But do even the best minds among us really grasp the fullness of this mystery?

Meditation upon His Infinite Love challenges our hearts. Do any of us, even the most loving hearts we know, come close to the Love that He poured out for us during His life on earth in His birth, everyday life, suffering, death and Resurrection, and that He continues to pour out for us on every altar in every Catholic church throughout the world every day in His Holy Eucharist?

Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus offers us a means to overcome these challenges. If the mind cannot grasp such Love intellectually, if the heart cannot contain such Love within its walls, true devotion to His Sacred Heart can help us draw closer to Him. We'll talk more about such devotion next Sunday.

For now, we simply turn to music to help us today. Beautiful music unites mind and heart. Our minds respond to the perfection of form we can perceive in beautiful music. In conjunction with this intellectual grasp of beauty, music's rhythms and melodies produce the visceral appreciation and enjoyment that fills our hearts. If the surest way to Jesus is through Mary, then the surest means of devotion to His Sacred Heart would be devotion to her Immaculate Heart.

Mary, dear Mother, as we listen to this traditional English version of the great hymn devoted to your Immaculate Heart, by your intercession help us to nurture true devotion to the Sacred Heart of your Beloved Son.
