A Sunday Thought About Unforgettable Kings to Start the Week Off Right

This is about two "Kings": Martin Luther and Nat Cole.

Tomorrow many of us are off from work because it's Martin Luther King Day. You don't need me to talk about Dr. King. The media is and will be filled with tributes that talk about him and the movement he inspired and led.

While I won't opine on his life or his work, I do want to note his voice. He was a great orator gifted with a wondrous voice that inspired so many to take a stand against the prejudices of the time. That voice was and is unforgettable.

...which brings us to another King: Nat King Cole. Popular at the time Dr. King was leading demonstrations to end segregation in the South, Nat King Cole's voice rose above the prejudices of the time just as did Dr. King's. Nat Cole was black, but his music was universal and his voice was and is, of course, unforgettable. Indeed, "Unforgettable" may be his signature song.

If you read last Sunday's post, you might remember this:

Imagine a life filled with the True, the Good, and the Beautiful!

I think Dr. King imagined such a life. So many of his orations spoke not only of justice, but of God and of Love. So often his words were steeped in truth and goodness. And if you listen to Nat King Cole's music - something I don't do often enough - you will hear and feel popular music at it's most beautiful.

The True, the Good, and the Beautiful stands in opposition to all the false teachings, bad behavior and vulgar pop music and culture that fills our minds, souls and senses day in and day out. Let's start the week off right by filling our senses with something beautiful, okay? It's from Nat King Cole. Beautiful in itself, it's title refers to the beautiful Mona Lisa. Something beautiful about something beautiful. Can't beat that!
