A Sunday Thought About the Unborm

Wednesday January 22nd marks the anniversary of Roe v Wade. A big demonstration will take place in Washington D.C., as it does every year. It will likely receive little media coverage if history is any guide. Many much smaller demonstrations receive lots of coverage, if the media believes there's a story they can exploit. Of course, if being a story were the only criteria for why the media covers a story, then the January 22nd March for Life would get extensive coverage. But it won't from the main stream media because the MSM supports a right to abortion.

There are many explanations for why they do support killing human beings in the womb - the unborn - but none of them make much sense, far as I can tell. Indeed, the "right to privacy" upon which the "right" to abort babies in the womb is based doesn't make much sense either. This past week, an excellent article in the January 16, 2014 edition of the Catholic weekly, The Wanderer, explained the source of this "right." Reading the explanation only reinforced the view that the "right to privacy" doesn't really make sense.

With this in mind, may I suggest that if you're not attending the March for Life on Wednesday, that you do observe January 22nd as a day of penance. Perform acts of penance in reparation for the heinous sin of legalized abortion, which has resulted in an estimated 55 million killings of unborn babies since January 22, 1973, the day of the Supreme Court's Roe v Wade decision which legalized such killings.

(You may also want to ask God's forgiveness on behalf of our country. I'm not sure how much of this killing He can tolerate without some sort of Divine Justice being meted out to us all.)

You may also want to consider reading solid Catholic publications on a regular basis. Fortunately there's a growing selection on the Internet - although you must use good judgment in picking what you read, as should be your practice with anything you read, especially on the Internet. In fact, The Wanderer, which still publishes its hard copy for delivery, now provides an e-edition that can be accessed on the Internet. After years of receiving it in the mail, I now happily log in to read its interesting, informative and always solidly Catholic articles. In fact, it's one of my sources for increasing my knowledge of my Catholic Faith and I can highly recommend it for that purpose alone.

But let's conclude with a moment of silence and prayer for the unborn who have been slaughtered these past 41 years as a result of a misguided and/or nefarious ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1973. The closest I've come to dead unborn babies is miscarriages my wife had. Given the wrenching nature of those experiences, and the fact that tomorrow is the birthday of our oldest child, it's quite beyond my comprehension why anyone would propose that it's OK to legalize the killing of the unborn.
