All Souls Day and Working on Saturday

I work some Saturdays. Depending on the workload, it could be an hour - sometimes it could be a half day or more. Today, though, is All Souls Day. I may do some work later, but the priority today is prayer and sacrifice for the Church Suffering, the Holy Souls in Purgatory.

No matter how busy the day gets at work today, I'll be thinking of and praying for loved ones who have died.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

We Catholics know the three alternatives: Heaven, Purgatory, Hell. Those who have died are in one of the the three. God forbid any of my loved ones are in Hell. That leaves Heaven and Purgatory.

If they're in Heaven, then they are among the saints, and we honored them yesterday on All Saints Day. These days, it seems everyone goes straight to Heaven when they die - or at least that's the way some priests talk about our dead at funeral Masses. But we know that our faith teaches us that we don't know this for sure. And so today we pray for our dead, in the event that they haven't quite reached Heaven yet. We pray for them because if they are in Purgatory they will need our prayers.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Don't forget the Holy Souls today. Nothing is more important than praying for them, not just this day, but every day. No deadline, no deal, no project, nothing your boss wants, nothing your customer needs, nothing is more important than our prayers for the Holy Souls.
