A Sunday Thought On Holy Priests

We Catholics hear all the time that we need more priests. Since the 1960s, the number of priests has dwindled and the number of seminarians to "restock" the priesthood has dwindled as well. We won't get into the reasons now, just please pray for holy priests.

I came across a heartfelt, even tragic, letter from Italy about the dwindling numbers of priests. I found it on Father Zuhlsdorf's excellent blog. Even as things appear to be (and are, to some extent) getting “better,” this letter reminds us that much remains to be done for our Holy Faith. For example, we wonder what will happen to those who do not have priests, the Mass, the Eucharist? Yes, apparently many places simply have no priests. In our posts, we often talk about daily prayer, spiritual reading, doctrinal study, attending Holy Mass - the so-called "norms" of piety. Central to all this is the reception of Holy Communion, the greatest source of grace, the one thing none of us Catholics can live without. Without priests, there's no Eucharist, no way to receive Holy Communion.

So today, let's join in prayer for holy priests, most especially for those who need them most.

Here's a link to the letter. I'm going to send you to Father Z's blog so you can also get the benefit of his excellent commentary.
