How to Pray at Work

So you got up and spent time with God this morning. Great. The New Year's off to a great start. Now you're at work. The day has begun and you're absorbed with your work - as you should be.

But what about God? Did you leave Him at the door when you got to work?

Okay, so you offered up your work to Him just before things got busy and you got absorbed in your work. You told Him you'd work for Him - for His greater glory - this day and every day. And you really meant it.

Yes, you'd like to be able to mentally "break away" from time to time to pray. But so often the day flies by and the busy-ness of business takes over and, well, the day's over before you know it. Another day flew by and you noticed you didn't pay God any "special" attention.

But wasn't your work a prayer? Didn't you offer your work to God when you started the day? Didn't you sincerely tell Him you would work for His greater glory?

Indeed you did. And indeed your work, offered to Him, done for His greater glory, was a form of prayer.

But maybe you want to do more. Wouldn't it be wonderful if you could just say some prayer from time to time, you know, in addition to that prayer right before you started working? Okay, try this: "Jesus."

That's it. Just say His Holy Name. Say it once, say it a dozen times. No, you don't have to say it out loud; you don't have to "mouth" the Holy Name. Just say it in your heart, and interior prayer: Jesus.

I just read (during my morning spiritual reading) that the name of Jesus is the shortest and most powerful of prayers. Check it out: it fights temptation and it builds you up, makes you more holy. So it not only terrifies demons and puts them to flight, it heals, nourishes, strengthens and enlightens the soul.

Say it one or more times throughout the day. Just His Holy Name:

Jesus!

Say it and grow in His love and holiness.

It's one of the easiest ways to pray at work. And it's one of the easiest ways to grow in holiness, to draw ever closer to Jesus.

Jesus!
