The Christmas Novena Starts Today

These December days - chilly, sunny, occasional overlays of clouds, early sunset, long night, short days - bring us close to Christmas. Every December work day from now until Christmas takes on a very special character: anticipation, excitement, fresh energy to persist in our work, even as we pray more fervently:

Divine Infant of Bethlehem, come and take birth in our hearts!

It's more than two weeks into Advent now. We're on the downside of the mountain. Lo and behold, it's December 16th - the first day we say our Christmas Novena.

Back to work: the pressing tasks come; we tackle them. The hours pass, we're soon home. Some shopping to do for gifts? That's OK. Just do it (ideally online!). But remember the Novena.

Slowly, our lives become as they should be - one with God, even at work. Nothing should separate us from God, even during our busiest days.

Jesus came to live here to show us how to live here. He made the connection with God for all of us. He gave us the Eucharist after He finished His work making our permanent connection with God. The Eucharist - He Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity - will always be here for us. The baby born on Christmas grew to manhood, lived amongst us, taught us, suffered and died for us, showed us our glorious future in His Resurrection. That baby comes again for us in just a few days.

The evening dims, the lights go on at home, all around us. Our work day ends. The short December days don't dim our spirits. The lights, the anticipation, the excitement lifts our hearts and minds. Our work is done for now. It's time for the Novena, the special prayer that will carry us these last remaining days to Christmas, to Our Lord, to Our Savior.
