Do you stand out at work?

One way to advance in this world is to "get noticed." You'll never get ahead if you're lost in the crowd. So many of us strive to "stand out" from the crowd.

If you stand out at work, you may be promoted. You may become CEO. You may attract those better clients to the firm. Stand out and you'll be successful. Successful to whom? Who will consider you successful?

Well, let's see, it'll include your boss, your shareholders, your partners, you're co-workers (although you can always expect a little envy thrown in from maybe some of them). Yep, you'll be successful and you'll stand tall. Stand out, stand tall.

What causes you to stand out? Depends on your job, but there really are only two ways to actually help the business grow - and helping it grow is the bottom line, isn't it? Those two ways are, first and foremost, creating more revenue for the company or, secondarily, reducing expenses. That's pretty much it. That's what makes a bottom line grow - more revenue and/or lower expenses.

Of course, whatever makes you stand out, Catholic man, don't let it go to your head. What really matters is that you stand out to Our Lord. Does he care about all that stuff we just talked about? It depends.

If all that stuff makes your head swell, causes you to become more self-centered, distracts you from His will, His plan for you, then all that standing out isn't going to matter - to Him. And what matters to Him is really what should matter most to us, right?

So what matters to Him? "We are distinguished with Him in this respect alone, if we are found to excel others in good works and in humility." (from the Introduction to The Rule of St Benedict)

(I've mentioned the Rule of St Benedict from time to time. It's filled with jewels like this.)

Gee, I hope that doesn't burst your bubble. I know how hard you worked to stand out and get ahead. (And there's nothing wrong with getting ahead in itself, of course.) But I just wanted to bring you back to what really matters.

The good news is that you can do all the things it takes to stand out and get ahead at work while excelling at good works, done humbly. Of course, it's not all that easy to do things that way. You've got to let go of that ego, got to keep your mind on what He wants from you each day, be a servant of others...all those good things we know He expects, that He's looking for.

Then go about standing out and getting ahead if that's what matters to you. Just remember that what should matter most to us should be what matters to Him, OK?
