To my Spiritual Director: Give me a break!
If you've got a spiritual director (someone, usually a priest, whom you meet with from time to time to help you develop your spiritual life) you'll know what I'm talking about here. I mean, what's with these guys?
First, they want you to start reading scripture every day for about 15 minutes; followed by some spiritual reading, reading about the truths of the faith, and, uh, let's do about 15 minutes of meditation too. So far, we're over an hour.
Then they want you to go to Mass and receive Holy Communion every day, besides saying the rosary every day - EVERY DAY!
And if that wasn't enough, let's start visiting the Blessed Sacrament and spend some time alone with Our Lord - oh, maybe 15 minutes...more if you can manage.
I'm adding this up and it's going over two hours a day. And that's not counting doing an examination of conscience during and/or at the end of the day, saying your morning and evening prayers, never mind the Angelus (at least in the morning), plus...well, we haven't even talked about the spiritual and corporal works of mercy (basically things you do for others) and all the other prayers and aspirations (short phrases/briefprayers)...and let's not forget the mortifications we should practice each day (giving things up - even when it's not Lent!).
It's more than a guy who's got a demanding job and a family life can take...I mean really.
What's with these guys? Is it because they're priests and just don't understand what we guys out there on the front lines of the world or work really go through?
(more to come...)
