What's your real "end"?

A good, even essential practice, in business is setting goals and objectives. As we pursue a longer-term goal, a more immediate objective, our daily actions are more productive, more efficient when we have a specific target.

For the most part, business goals and objectives are driven by the overall business plan of the enterprise. Whether you work in a large corporation, or run your own business, that business needs revenue; it needs customers; it needs to control expenses. Someone, or some group of people needs to consider all this and put together an overall strategy, broken down into specific steps.

Well, there's nothing here you don't already know. But let's consider one more step. You're a Catholic man at work. So where's God in all this?

Try this prayer while you're planning your or pursuing your business strategy:

"Lord, let me know my end, and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is!" (Psalm 39:4)

Now there's a specific framework for a Catholic man at work. It puts you and God into the picture together. You're listening. You want to know His will. You're willing to live, to work, according to His plan for you.

Of course, you may not "hear" Him right away. You may not even be sure what He wants while you put your business plan together, or spend your day focused on accomplishing an important business objective.

But these few lines from scripture, or some similar prayer, will keep the lines of communication open (that and an open heart and mind on your part). You're letting God know that your work doesn't exclude Him. He'll do the rest, in time. He'll let you know your true end.
