Simon of Cyrene on the job

We've all got a cross to bear; sometimes more than one. And when you can't stand your job, or your boss, every day brings a cross.

If you think it's bad for you, think about the guy over there. Don't you think he's got his crosses too? Yes, yes, you've got all you can handle. But remember, you're Catholic and it's Lent. What's that got to do with it? Try Simon of Cyrene on for size.

He had his own life and his own problems on that first Good Friday. There he was was minding his own business; maybe he was curious about the procession of condemned winding through the streets. In any case, the Roman soldiers snared him and forced him to carry Jesus' cross.

He probably had no idea who this condemned man was. It's a good bet he thought Jesus was a criminal of some sort. That's just the sort who would be condemned to be crucified. And now he, Simon, has to carry the cross for this criminal?!!

Yes, we're asked not only to bear our own burdens, to carry our own crosses, but to lend a hand to others. Even when we've got enough of a load ourselves. (And who doesn't feel they've got all they can handle?)

Think of Simon the Cyrenian during this busy day at work. Take a moment to look around. Does someone need a helping hand? Is someone bearing a cross that seems too much to bear? Will you be the hand that God uses to ease their burden?
